Girard Alumnus Featured in Philly.com Series
Girard College alumnus Abu Fofanah '11 was selected to appear as the first in a series of Black History Month features for the online arm of the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News.
Journalist Sofiyah Ballin describes the series: "For Black History Month, we're exploring history and identity through the lens of joy. Black joy is the ability to love and celebrate black people and culture, despite the world dictating otherwise. Black joy is liberation."
Chosen because of his success as a young entrepreneur, Fofanah cites experiences with a mentor group at Girard College where black professionals inspired him to develop confidence in himself.
"While I was there (Girard College)," Fofanah says, "I was a part of a program called Alpha Boulé. It is a program for black men who were in the community to lead by example."
"A lot of us had never seen successful black men who weren’t on TV or an athlete," he said. "They made it a point to show that you could be successful and help other people who look like you on the way."
