A Weekend That Brought History to Life

Founding Forward’s Spirit of America Youth Leadership Program was an unforgettable experience that gave me the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities through the weekend. This multi-day residential conference, which was held this fall, teaches American history, civic responsibility, and leadership through interactive activities, discussions, and visits to historical sites.
We began by leaving school early, racing to the bus, and diving straight into the excitement. My backpack broke, but a staffer at Founding Forward fixed it in no time, which showed how the program emphasizes support and community from the very beginning. Upon arrival, dorm check-ins, volleyball, basketball, and icebreaker games set the stage for bonding and teamwork.
The first night was a journey in history: A reenactor in an old soldier’s uniform gave a tour of Valley Forge, paying homage to history’s forgotten names and stars alike, including Black soldiers who fought for freedom. We received a ceremonial round from the gun and took part in a moment of silence, connecting ourselves with the ones in the past, knowing history isn’t just facts in a book – it’s lived courage and sacrifice. Activities such as “Constitution Jeopardy” during the evening allowed the participants to combine learning with fun, while friendships were cemented through discussions in the dorms or over TikToks.
Days two and three were full of hands-on civic learning: debating bills, balancing security and liberty, practicing argument structure with a Thomas Jefferson presenter, and trying our hand at leadership through committee work. As one staff member said to me, “Cheering people on is never a waste; it can lift someone’s voice in a world that often goes quiet.” The advice was personal and relevant as I found my voice in debate and leadership exercises.
We visited historic sites, learned the principles leading to the Declaration of Independence and Constitution, and discussed public policy and civic responsibility.
I left the Founding Forward campus with both knowledge and connection: a clearer understanding of history, the skills to engage in civil discourse, and a sense of responsibility to lead thoughtfully. The Spirit of America program was challenging, fun, and empowering. Every participant gains an opportunity for academic, social, and personal growth through this program. Whatever interest one has in civics, leadership, or history, Spirit of America is more than a program – it’s an experience.
