Girard College Awarded $750,000 State Grant to Develop Science Center

Senator Sharif Street and Representative Donna Bullock recently announced that Girard College was awarded a Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program grant in the amount of $750,000 that will support the development of a state-of-the-art Science Center at the historic boarding school.

The Science Center project includes renovating the high school, middle school, and elementary science rooms with new systems, ventilation, chemical storage areas, lighting, teaching walls, casework, chemistry hoods and computer network infrastructure, helping to equip Girard students comparably to other independent schools.

“I want to thank Sen. Street and Rep. Bullock for their unwavering support of the students at Girard College,” said James D. Turner, Interim President. “Young men and women of color from under-served backgrounds are under-represented in STEM fields, and Girard’s new Science Center will give hundreds of students the academic springboard to achieve in STEM careers.”

Turner added, “Girard is also grateful for Governor Wolf’s support of the project and appreciate him making these funds available to the school.”

“This is a wonderful project that will provide our students with the tools they need to explore the world of science and technology,” said Sylvia Bastani, Chief Advancement Officer. “Girard College deeply appreciates the work of Sen. Street and Rep. Bullock, who understand the needs of our students and the impact of a Girard education. By promoting the development of a science center, in addition to student mental health resources and educational equity initiatives, Sharif and Donna are living their values and empowering future generations.”
