Mark Bass Named Head Basketball Coach at Girard College

Phil Martelli, who was head coach of the men’s basketball team at St. Joseph’s University for 24 years, spoke with the high school basketball team before introducing Mark Bass as Girard’s new basketball coach. Bass was an assistant men’s basketball coach for 20 years at Saint Joseph’s University.

Girard College is proud to announce the appointment of Mark Bass as its new Head Basketball Coach. Bass brings an impressive and diverse background to the role, featuring over 25 years of experience as a collegiate coach, high school head coach, and professional player.

Bass’s extensive resume includes a 20-year tenure as Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at Saint Joseph’s University, where he was integral to a period of great success, including two Atlantic 10 Tournament Championships. His deep roots in the Philadelphia basketball community and his proven track record of developing talent at all levels made him the ideal candidate to lead the Girard College program.

Most recently, Bass served as an Assistant Coach at South Kent School, where he also played a key role in guiding student-athletes through the college recruitment and NCAA eligibility process. His leadership as Head Boys Basketball Coach at Trenton Catholic Preparatory Academy resulted in a 22-5 record, a Mercer County Tournament Championship, and a Sectional Championship, earning him Mercer County Coach of the Year honors for the 2021-2022 season.

“I am incredibly excited and honored for the opportunity to lead the basketball program at Girard College,” Bass said. “My life’s work has been dedicated to using the game of basketball to teach life lessons and help student-athletes achieve their full potential. I look forward to building a competitive, disciplined, and high-character program that the entire Girard community can be proud of.”

A Philadelphia native and St. Joseph’s University alumnus, Bass was inducted into the Saint Joseph’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001. He also holds a master’s degree in athletic leadership from Rider University.
