Seven Students Inducted into National Honor Society

Three Seniors and four Sophomores completed the necessary requirements to join the Girard College NHS chapter this year.

The ranks of the Girard College High School chapter of the National Honor Society more than doubled recently as seven students were inducted into the nationwide organization at a Chapel service on January 25, 2023. The Girard chapter now boasts 13 students in grades 10-12 who have earned this distinction.

Founded more than 100 years ago by the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the National Honor Society serves to recognize those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. Each chapter establishes selection criteria and members are reviewed and approved by a five-member faculty council.

Ms. Jody Fernandez, High School History Teacher, serves as Girard’s NHS Adviser. She shared a moving introduction that highlighted the hard work and persistence demonstrated by this group of inductees.

“There is no doubt that these students have proven themselves through the actions they choose to take each day,” she said. “I have watched these young people face adversity head on with some of the greatest poker faces this world has ever seen. These students are courteous, forthright, advantageous, and charitable, and each possess within them a radiant light and indomitable spirit.”

Girard’s NHS students will continue to lead, serve others, and achieve academic excellence throughout their high school career and beyond, and character will always be a guiding principle for their endeavors.

“I strive to live by Girard College’s Core Values – Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Courage, and Compassion – every day,” said Curtis Goines ’23 in his induction speech. “I have seen the benefits that having good character brings into my life. You should not expect something because you are a good person or because you have great character, but instead, find gratitude in the good that you do.”

Congratulations to this year’s inductees to the National Honor Society. Keep up the great work!
