Corinthian Impact Award:  Independence Blue Cross Foundation and Lorina Marshall-Blake, Foundation President

Lorina Marshall-Blake is the president of the Independence Blue Cross Foundation (the Foundation), a charitable, private foundation founded in 2011, and also the vice president of community affairs at Independence Blue Cross (Independence). Marshall-Blake is passionate about giving back to the community. She is involved with more than 30 professional and civic organizations and serves on more than 25 non-profit boards and committees, including serving as president of The Fund for Girard College.
 

In her role with the Foundation, she leads strategic, programmatic, and operational efforts to fulfill the Foundation’s mission to lead sustainable solutions that improve the health and wellness of the community. Under her leadership, the Foundation has established itself as a collaborator, innovator, and thought leader in addressing emerging health needs in southeastern Pennsylvania. By the end of 2023, the Foundation will have awarded grants totaling more than $80 million to nonprofits and research reaching medically under-resourced areas and vulnerable populations. The Foundation grants support for a multi-year collaboration with Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to provide access to behavioral health care for Girard College Scholars.


Corinthian Legacy Award:  Henry G. Grabowski, Ph.D., Class of 1958

Henry Grabowski is Professor Emeritus of Economics at Duke University. He received his Ph.D from Princeton University and has served on the faculties of Yale and Duke Universities. He has been Director of the Duke Program in Pharmaceuticals and Health Economic since 1983. His academic specialties include the economics of the pharmaceutical industry, government regulation of business, and the economics of innovation. He has authored more than one hundred peer reviewed articles and several books and monograph publications. Dr. Grabowski has testified several times before Congress on the issues of FDA regulation, health care reform, drug innovation, and vaccine policies. The US Congress has recognized the significant role that his academic work has had in the passage of legislation that incentivized development of new therapies for tropical diseases like malaria and TB. He has served as an advisor to the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine, the US General Accounting Office, and the Federal Trade Commission as well as several foundations and business organizations. Dr. Grabowski was the class of 1958 valedictorian, editor of the Girardian magazine and Girard News, and President of the National Honor Society.  Having a strong enduring connection to his fellow Girardians, and having benefited from an excellent education in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields, Dr. Grabowski, along with his wife, Virginia, in 2022 pledged $500,000 Challenge Grant to support the future of STEM education at Girard College.
